How solar power works

See sunlight become usable power.

Explore the journey from sunlight to the switchboard, then shape an indicative solar day around your own energy use.

The connected system

Four stages.
One useful flow.

Panels do the visible work, but the inverter, switchboard, consumption pattern, battery and grid connection determine where that energy goes next.

  1. 01

    Sunlight meets the panels

Photovoltaic cells respond to sunlight and produce direct-current electricity. Output changes through the day with light, heat, roof direction and shading.

  2. 02

    The inverter makes it usable

The inverter converts direct current into alternating current that the property can use, while monitoring the system’s operation.

  3. 03

    The property uses solar first

Appliances can consume solar power as it is generated. Matching more electricity use with daylight can increase direct self-consumption.

  4. 04

    Surplus is stored or exported

Compatible batteries can store selected surplus for later. Remaining energy can flow to the grid under the conditions of your connection and electricity plan.

Interactive energy model

Build your solar day.

Change the household and system settings, then move through the day to see where the energy can flow.

Solar is covering the home, the battery cannot take all the surplus, and power is flowing to the grid.

The practical questions

What the diagram cannot show.

01Does solar still work on cloudy days?

Yes. Panels can generate in diffuse light, although output is generally lower than under clear, direct sunshine.

02What happens to solar power during a blackout?

Most grid-connected systems switch off for network safety. Backup operation requires compatible battery and inverter equipment plus a specifically designed backup circuit.

03Why does daytime electricity use matter?

Using electricity while the system is generating can reduce the amount purchased from the grid. A battery may shift some surplus into later hours when the design supports it.
